On the matter of gas mileage

I recently read that contest winners designed a car that got 3000 miles to the gallon. No, that's not a typo, it really was three thousand MPG. Granted, it's not real spacious, but when you increase mileage by two orders of magnitude, you have to cut some corners.

If that surprised you, read about the Swiss college kids who hit 12,666 MPG (5385 KPL) several years ago.

And if that surprises you, you might be intrigued to find out that the President of Shell Oil once thought we'd have 80-MPG engines by the year Anno Domini 1939.

It takes effort and commitment

We have seen tailpipe emissions cut by orders of magnitude, like 90% less pollution in some cases etc. Similarly for industrial pollution. Still we know it's not enough.

The only chance we have to transition to the solar economy of the future, an economy based not on burning stuff, will demand that we cut back on energy consumption in the same fashion.

Shoot, give me a car that gets a hundred miles a gallon and I'll gladly give you $10 a gallon for the fuel.
