Here's a reality check which comes off as an intellectual uppercut to middle-class progressives: oppressed people suck. I wouldn't have put it quite that bluntly, but in essence, there's a lot of truth to it. Until you really have lived with the poor for an extended length of time, you are in serious danger of romanticizing them. In reality, the poor can be prejudiced, short-sighted, crude, and even cruel.

However, as much as this article might make you cringe and squirm, read it through to the end. It puts the poor in perspective, but it puts you in perspective, too.
