Green presidential raceEsteban's remark about the Green Party's presidential candidate for 2008 forced me to look around for any news on that subject. Here's what I found: According to The Next Prez blog there are three announced candidates for the Green Party's 2008 presidential nomination: Georgia's Nan Garrett Garrett was the Georgia Green Party's write-in candidate for governor in 2004 and received about 1000 votes. She is a former Clayton County judge and currently works as an attorney. Milnes is a Libertarian hoping to run a unity campaign, bringing together the two strongest third parties. Swift is a Texas Green Party activist. According to the Green Party's election database, she has never run for office as a Green. They also list a number of candidates as probable. They are: Medea Benjamin Most of those names have been floated before. Rich Whitney is the newcomer. He was the Illinois Green Party's candidate for governor in 2006. He is a lawyer with a long history of working on behalf of civil rights, the environment, labor and antiwar movements. Whitney received 361,163 votes for governor, which is more than David Cobb received for president in 2004. I haven't heard any word from Ralph Nader, who has run for president every election since 1992. Hard to see him doing it again as a Green. Peter Camejo and David Cobb have both announced they will not run. There may be others, including some celebrity candidates. The ones most mentioned are: Former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney; actress Susan Sarandon and former PBS newsman Billy Moyers. I created an IRV poll at DemoChoice with 14 possible candidates. Please vote and let others know about it.

None of them grab me right off.
I have a lot of respect for all the folks listed. I'm particularly pleased to see how successful Rich Whitney was last year in his race. However, I just can't see us running another white male (and lawyer, to boot). So, at this point, I don't have strong feelings about any of them. I wish I did.
How about Cindy Sheehan?
While I know that she's not going to be Green enough for some folks, not even sure if she's a member of the party or not, I know that Ms. Sheehan does know how to get on the news, and I think that is *critical* to anything approaching success.
She was very positive to the Greens in Milwaukee
The only time I've seen her in person, she opened her remarks with a variation on the line "America doesn't need a third party, American needs a second party." If that left any ambiguity in people's mind, she went on to say that Democrats and Republicans feed at the same corporate trough.
However, it would be a mistake, not to mention unfair, to assume that support for us makes her Presidential timber. Until I hear her say she's interested, I'm going to assume she's not.
