Corporations ask to be regulated

It's true. It has to be, I read it on Fox News. A number of big businesses and corporate interest groups like the national Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers want the federal government to regulate their carbon emissions.

Why would they do such a counter-intuitive thing? I can think of a couple of reasons.

1. Some of them are planning to limit their carbon emissions anyway, and want to force the others to do so as well, to keep from giving their competitors any advantage.

2. Some of them are planning to limit their carbon emissions and are looking for a way to make some money off it (selling pollution credits to other companies).

3. They have no intention of limiting their carbon emissions, and plan to buy their way out of the issue.

4. They've figured out that the global warming issue isn't going away, and this is an attempt to get out in front of it. If there must be legislation on it, better for them to set the terms than a bunch of whacko treehuggers.

5. They want...

... a piece of legislation that Bush can influence with his veto rather than one that will be signed by the next President.

Maybe....

It's possible they're bringing this up only to kill it. But I tend to think they genuinely want the regulation. Check out this piece by Kevin Carter on how Upton Sinclair did the bottom line of the meat-packing companies a lot of good.

I'm not saying...

... they want Bush to veto any bill that is put forward, but that the threat of that veto will result in a weaker piece of legislation that is more acceptable to them. A more progressive president (and does anyone doubt our next president will be more progressive than Bush) will not wield such a threat, IMHO.
