Men, men, men

The two leading contenders for the Democratic Party nomination for president are both ground breaking in their own way. One (Hillary Clinton) is a woman and the other (Barack Obama) is black.

If either wins the nomination it would be the first time it wasn't a white male leading one of the major parties in a presidential election.

So what do the Greens do to counter that? Well, the obvious answer is not to nominate a white male. And for the past couple of years it seems that Greens are determined that their 2008 presidential candidate be a woman.

So someone please explain this poll I started a couple of weeks ago.

Nearly 70 Greens have voted so far, and the last three candidates standing in this poll as of this posting were men.

Even the Republicans are showing more diversity than the Greens. Yeah, he's a white male, but their leading contender -- Rudy Giuliani -- favors abortion rights, isn't anti-gay, is divorced and there are pictures out there of him in drag. For the GOP, that's about as diverse as they get.

It remains to be seen if any of those three candidates can capture their parties' nomination. But do the Greens really want to enter a presidential campaign with a male candidate for the fourth straight election? Is that the message they want to send?

Or do Greens just not like any of the women listed in this poll?

Um, technically...

Matt Gonzalez isn't a white male, he's a Latino male. Having met him, I can confirm that he has pale skin and no accent, but he still qualifies as Latino.

Then again, if we're getting technical, Nader is Arabic, because his parents were Lebanese immigrants. So, arguably, he's not white, either.

As for the poll... Tip O'Neil was wrong: politics isn't local. Politics is personal. We vote for those we feel positive towards, not necessarily those we feel are Presidential timber. At this point, we don't have a lot of options, and frankly, I'm at a loss to present any myself. Our finest minds have ruled out running for any office, let alone the Presidency.

70 Greens have not voted so

70 Greens have not voted so far, I voted at least seven times. What bothered me more than gender or race was that the non-Greens did so well. I think it was an enormous growing up when in 04 the Greens got the Nader off their back.

I voted for Matt Gonzalez (couple of times) because of his little speech at the Green 04 convention. He seemed articulate, clean, and really a good guy (as Biden would say).

What did surprise me was Pat did so poorly. While she certainly needs some website counseling, she ran a very strong Gov campaign.

Here is what the D and R tickets will be.

Clinton / Obama
Gingrich / Rice
